The History of Sports Betting in Colorado
Colorado has a long and storied history with gambling that dates back to the frontier towns of the 19th and 20th centuries. But unless you want to include horse and greyhound racing—which were formally authorized by law in 1948—sports betting had never been a particularly big deal in the state.
That certainly began to change in 1960 with the introduction of the American Football League and the Denver Broncos, and it intensified in the 1970s with the Broncos joining the NFL. But by that point, Colorado had largely been influenced by the federal stance. Even its legal casinos did not offer sports betting, and any change in that regard would face even great challenges with the Wire Act of 1971. Then came the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992, and with it, the dream died.
PASPA Would Not Stand the Test of Time
While New Jersey would be integral to the passing of PASPA—and would even be given a grandfathered out that it chose not to take—it would regret the efforts. It would not just regret its part but spend substantial time and other resources fighting the NFL behemoth to legalize sports betting. At points, resistance seemed futile, but in 2018, the Supreme Court of the U.S. deemed PASPA unconstitutional.
States like Colorado were immediately free to choose for themselves whether sports betting was legal. Not long after the Supreme Court ruling, Colorado proposed proposition DD: Legalize Sports Betting with Tax Revenue for Water Projects. If approved, prop DD would legalize retail and online sports betting for the 33 existing casinos in the state. All betting action would be levied a 10% tax to fund state water projects. Prop DD passed by the slimmest of margins: 51.41% to 48.59%.

DraftKings Sportsbook Welcome Bonus for Colorado Residents
Any Coloradoan making a real money deposit at DraftKings for the first time can take advantage of a welcome bonus. Note that if you do not yet have an account, you will have to create one. Make sure that you sign up through the sportsbook portal so that you do not get the DFS bonus instead. However, any real money you deposit can be used toward any service that DraftKings offers.
The welcome bonus requires a minimum deposit of $5. Your available bonus will be worth 20% of whatever you deposit. In other words, if you deposit $5, you will have access to a $1 bonus, and you would need to deposit $5,000 in order to claim the maximum bonus of $1,000.
Bonuses at DraftKings come in the form of non-cashable credits but are not awarded immediately. Your bonus is released to you $1 at a time each time you have played through $25 in total, and that applies to DFS and the casino in addition to the sportsbook. You have 90 days from the deposit to claim the bonus. Any unclaimed bonus at that point is voided, but any claimed bonus does not expire as long as you maintain an active account.
